“You gave me the right direction during one of the toughest times in my life:” How Te Tira Ahu Pae’s student advocates are helping Massey students thrive at University.
Student Advocates are the hidden heroes of Massey University – most students don’t know about them until they encounter one of the many academic or welfare issues that students may experience during their time at Uni. That’s when Te Tira Ahu Pae’s advocacy staff step up to help out.
Student Advocacy is a free and confidential service ran by experienced staff at Massey’s students’ association, Te Tira Ahu Pae. They can help you with academic issues such as grade disputes, course-related problems, academic integrity cases, as well all more personal welfare issues, including tenancy problems, financial hardship, or dealing with harassment.
“We see a lot of students struggling with financial hardship and balancing life, work and study” says Kat McGregor, Te Tira Ahu Pae’s Lead Advocate. “Our team is here to offer support and to help students navigate their options.”
“One of our key services is of course academic advocacy for both undergraduate and postgrad. Our Advocates have a strong understanding of Massey’s systems and can help you navigate processes within the university. However, we are also independent from Massey, which allows us to look at things objectively and advocate for your best interest.”
For students struggling with financial hardship, Te Tira Ahu Pae offers $150 minor hardship grants that students can apply for once a semester, as well as bugeting advice and free period products.
“We want students to come to us early so that we can help them before a problem gets worse. If it’s not something we can help with directly, we can refer you to other university services or outside organisations that specialise in dealing with specific welfare issues.”
Te Tira Ahu Pae’s advocacy services are highly valued by students who have used them. Take a look at some of the feedback received from students in 2024:
“Honestly, this wouldn’t have been possible without your guidance and support. You truly gave me the right direction during one of the toughest times in my life, and I can’t thank you enough for all the help you’ve provided.”
“I’m incredibly grateful for everything you’ve done for me. It means a lot, and I’ll always remember your kindness and encouragement.”
“My issue was handled beautifully by the student advocacy team.”
