Introducing your new Ōtehā / Albany Campus Vice President: Shayne Sullivan

Meet Shayne: Auckland VP Strengthening Community at Ōtehā

Ōtehā campus has welcomed a new Auckland Vice President, and Shayne is ready to bring both care and vision to student life.

Known for being approachable, whether he’s at a BBQ or sitting down for a kōrero, Shayne is focused on building strong connections with students while championing a long-term aspiration: the establishment of a Marae on the Ōtehā campus.

A Vision for Ōtehā

For Shayne, a Marae is more than a building. It represents whakawhanaungatanga (building relationships), manaakitanga (care and hospitality), and kotahitanga (unity).

“Ōtehā deserves a beating heart, a space where all students can come together, share kai, and feel part of something bigger than their studies,” Shayne says. “It’s a vision that reflects Te Ao Māori and sits in line with both Te Tira Ahu Pae and Massey University’s Te Tiriti-led aspirations.”

He is clear that this is a long-term journey, not an overnight project. “It will take time, partnership, and the voice of many students, but it’s a direction worth moving towards.”

Welcoming International Students

Ōtehā has the largest international student community at Massey, something Shayne sees as a strength. He believes a Marae could be a unique space where cultures meet and international students experience Aotearoa in a meaningful way.

“For international students, studying here is about more than a degree. It’s also about experiencing the culture of this land. A Marae would make that experience real and part of everyday campus life.”

Leadership with Presence

Shayne’s approach to leadership is grounded in the everyday. Students can expect to see him around campus, at events, cooking for students, or listening to their ideas and concerns.

“The big vision matters, but it starts with showing up for the small things,” he says. “Being present builds trust, and trust makes Ōtehā a place where everyone belongs.”

Looking Ahead

As Auckland Vice President, Shayne is committed to strengthening community, celebrating culture, and ensuring student voices are heard. His leadership blends everyday connection with a long-term outlook, helping shape Ōtehā into a campus where all students feel at home.
